Lantaw Native Restaurant, SRP Cebu

I have been to Lantaw Native Floating Restaurant Cordova branch. And this is actually my first time to visit their branch in SRP after my kuya took us here for his birthday. Location is a bit inaccessible since there are no jeepneys passing this area & it can be hard to grab a taxi on the way home. It was good that my kuya and his girlfriend brought their cars so our family of 11 members finally got the chance to come here.

My OOTD. Don't worry I'm wearing shorts. LOL.
There's the birthday boy.
Lantaw is a Visayan term which means “to view” which is exactly what you get when visiting their restaurants may it be in Cordova, Busay, or SRP. They will never fail to give you an exquisite & breathtaking view of the mountains, the city and the sea while dining al fresco. And I just love how the natural sea breeze can keep you cool while enjoying your dinner. It simply adds to the romantic feel when you’re dining with someone special.

The place is also very Native Filipino with all 3 restaurants designed as large, high ceiling huts made from sturdy wooden materials. Tables and chairs are also made of wood and you can also choose to sit on those with large comfy sofas situated outside near the sea.

Mi familia.

Their menu is also a hodgepodge of both well-loved and exotic Filipino dishes. One of the exotic dishes I've tried is their Cordova Express which is their own version of the Bicol Express. This has shrimps in it though which gave it a bit of a twist. Their Sweet & Sour Tangigue Rolls are not bad as well and my son loved it.

Cordova Express - P165

Their new Sweet & Sour Tangigue Rolls. Forgot how much this costs. It's not on the menu.

Their Grilled Pork, Lechon Kawali & Crispy Pata are some of my fave dishes here (yes, I love pork. LOL). But the Crispy Pata broke my tooth and is the reason why I had trouble eating few days later and why I have to visit a dentist to get it extracted. LOL. It’s tasty but the skin is a little too crispy and a bit sharp. I went home with wounds on the upper roof of my mouth and a cracked tooth that day. Price of being matakaw (greedy) I guess.

Grilled Pork Belly - P195

Lechon Kawali - P240

Crispy Pata (Small) - P375. Failed to take a photo of this before it was attacked. LOL.

Other things we ordered were Pancit Canton, Tuna Belly, Calamares, and Cordova Cooler. The Cordova Cooler drink, however, was a tad too sweet for me.

Tuna Belly - P240

Calamares - P250

Cordova Cooler (Big) - P190

Our verdict on the food is good. Not bad but nothing special as well. It’s really the ambiance that makes this place a winner for me. I’m not that choosy when it comes to Filipino food for as long as they don’t taste weird. And prices are also reasonable and I just love that they offer a variety of dishes to choose from! You can check their menu here.

Hubby ♥♥♥

The only thing that disappointed me here was the service. Their staff isn’t very attentive and can be quite hard to call their attention. I remember that we had to ask them twice to serve us water because the first one may have forgotten. And that when we asked the lady staff to take our orders she simply told us that she’d get someone to take our orders. Not sure if she was the manager or God knows what her role was that she couldn’t take our orders herself but she may have forgotten because after minutes of waiting nobody came to take our orders. So we had to call another waiter who finally took our order. Frustrating right? And wifi wasn’t available when we came here as well.

My baby boys, Yuan & Yuri.

Overall, I would still recommend Lantaw Native Restaurant if you & your companions are up for some serious Filipino food while away from the busy city & malls. Just bring your “patience” with you. LOL. And if you’re going with your significant other, it is best to go there before 6PM so you can catch the beautiful sunset. Totally romantic!

Choco-Late de Batirol Garden Restaurant, Baguio

Choco-Late de Batirol was one of the things that got me excited for our Baguio Trip since I’ve read a lot of positive feedback from different blogs and it was also listed as one of the must-visit places in Baguio. In fact, when we first arrived here the first thing I asked my husband’s friend’s girlfriend, Yvette, a local in Baguio, was where Choco-Late de Batirol is, and if it was far, and if it’s true that their chocolate drink and food tasted so good! She gave me a so-so response but I still wanted to try it for myself.

So the next day, we decided to take our brunch at Choco-Late de Batirol. I can feel my excitement then and it’s like I could already taste the hot & thick tsokolate on our way there. The place is a bit hard to find because it is located at a small cozy alcove hidden among the forest of Camp John Hay (near Gate 2 and Baguio Country Club).

So as not to miss this small almost-hidden cafe, keep an eye for this yellow sign along the road.

Around this café is a lush, fairytale-like garden that will bring out a mystical feeling. It reminded me of that cozy dwarf house in the fairytale, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. So we immediately took pictures around the place before finding a table.

I think the people at the back are doing tattoos.

Hubby and baby taking pictures.

Our baby Yuri.

Inside is just as good as it is outside. You will find a display of wooden artifacts and a few recycled materials used as decorations on tables, chairs, and even on their roof! And I just love its intimate & laid-back ambiance of nature.

Choco-Late de Batirol is actually the most awarded and recognized garden-restaurant in Baguio. It is a Filipino Café that specializes in hot, thick, bittersweet chocolate drinks made from Philippine-sourced cacao beans. Their chocolate drink is traditionally made by swiftly hand-stirring the tsokolate inside a batirol (copper pot) and with the use of a molinillo (wooden whisk) until you achieve a thick and frothy consistency. I would give this place a thumbs up for preserving the Philippine tradition & culture.

For our orders, my husband’s friend, Orvic, ordered the Traditional Blend whereas I ordered their Almond flavor because I’m a sucker for chocolate with nuts. My husband, however, ordered their cold batirol – the Baguio Classic flavor which he also shared with our son, Yuri.

Our baby Yuri is crying because his daddy took "his"drink for the photo. Lol.

To be honest, I was a bit disappointed with my order. It had a bitter, nutty, & burnt taste. It was like they added too much roasted almonds in it. The Traditional Blend tasted better than mine. It had a distinctive, rich & strong taste. But according to my friend, the sikwate (local Cocoa) in Cebu tasted better.

Traditional Blend (P80) and Almond (P90).

Say hi to Orvic!

I also got to try their Baguio Classic cold blend and I can still taste that bittersweet flavor of the cacao and I somehow hoped that they made it a bit sweeter. My husband also described it as a champorado (chocolate porridge) shake but more of bitter and less of sweet. LOL.

Baguio Classic (Cold Batirol, P135)

Sad to say, none of the drinks we ordered met my expectation and in my opinion, not worth the price at all. We decided to skip on the pricey food items after that disappointment. This was probably because my expectation rose with all the hype on the internet and also because the taste was new to me. BUT the ambiance is what makes it something that you should not miss out when visiting Baguio. It makes a good hangout place if you just want to warm up & take a break from Baguio’s cold weather. You can also check their prices here.

I was also a bit disappointed with the waitress here because she barely smiled from the time she took our orders, to serving them, up to giving us the bill. I’m not sure if she wasn’t in the mood that day or she had issues with Bisaya customers (since we were talking in our Cebuano language while deciding what to order). Her negative aura may have caused our orders to go bad. Hmm... Just kidding.

Overall, I’d say the place is nice! I’d still suggest that you give their chocolate drink a chance though because we may not have the same taste and you might like it. But I suggest you go for the Traditional Blend to appreciate it better. And make sure to take pictures while there! They also have a cute hidden garden beside this place. Good place to take those Instagram-worthy photos.

Dong Juan, The Persimmon Complex, Mabolo

You know a good Filipino restaurant when it offers a family-friendly atmosphere (knowing Filipinos are very family-oriented) and the food just sticks to your mouth and keeps you coming back for more. That is exactly what I felt after trying out the fusion of Filipino & Western cuisine offered in Dong Juan.

Dong Juan is a Cebu homegrown restaurant that started as a hole-in-the-wall resto in Guadalupe and is run by entrepreneurial couple, Aubrey & Barney Borja. The name Dong Juan comes from the affluent profligate Don Juan, but instead replaced Don with Dong (short for “dodong”) which is a Cebuano endearment for young men which means “The average pinoy”. Thus, the restaurant basically aims to provide luxurious food in wallet-friendly prices for the regular Filipino.

Candy Crush inspired wall.
The restaurant’s ambiance is very homey. I like how they were able to combine traditional and modern elements into a contemporary look. And I just love the fact that they are bringing out a more family-friendly atmosphere by giving out activity materials for kids, as well as including kid-friendly dishes on their menu. Not every restaurant does that and this is a good practice to keep kids entertained while waiting for their orders, and to make it easier for parents like me in choosing meals for the kiddos. According to Mrs. Borja they will be launching this starting August 2016.

This brought out the kid in me. LOL.

Dong Juan is actually more famous for their Dong Juan Burger and I’m sure you’ve read blogs about how great their burger is. So today, I’ll be writing about other stuff on their menu which also deserves to be on the spotlight.

To start with, we had Mozzarella Sticks and Chili Wings for appetizer. I really love cheese but somehow their Mozzarella Sticks tasted a bit bland for me if you’d eat it on its own, but it goes perfectly with its marinara sauce. The Chili Wings, however, was a hit. The buffalo wings are coated with chili paste and sesame seeds. I really liked its sweet and mildly spicy taste.

For drinks, they offered us a choice of their Kalamansi Blush and house blend Iced Tea. The iced tea had a really unique container. I was expecting it to be served on a mason jar container but this one’s really cute! The Kalamansi Blush is a definite must-try. It’s an infusion of the local kalamansi and real strawberries from Baguio! They’d even add 3 or 4 whole strawberries with it! But of course make sure that you mix it well before drinking or else it’s gonna taste sour.

For the main dishes, we had their Dong Juan Fried Rice, Seafood Soup, Baby Back Ribs in Barbecue Sauce, All Meat Pochero and Gambas Pasta. My top 3 picks would be the Dong Juan Fried Rice, All Meat Pochero and Gambas Pasta for the following reasons: The Fried Rice was really flavorful and it’s also made with beef. You can in fact eat it on its own because it’s that good! The All Meat Pochero also took me by surprise. My initial reaction was, “What? No bone? So no bone marrow to scoop into?” but when I tasted it I completely forgot about the bone marrow. The meat was really soft and tender, and the sauce is very creamy and flavorful. According to Aubrey, they added milk on the sauce. No wonder it’s so good! The Gambas Pasta was something different for me. Aside from being flavorful, it was also served with a really soft tablea-infused bun. Most restaurants serve their pastas with garlic bread and although it was something new, the tablea bread complimented the pasta well. This was also topped with bonito flakes (thinly-cut fish) which was a first for me. And the shrimps were also cooked to perfection.

The Baby Back Ribs did not make it to my top 3 for the sole reason that it lacked the smoky barbecue taste which was what I was looking for. Others had this on their top 3 though and one of our fellow reviewer/blogger ranked this her top 1 so it’s not all that bad. Still a must-try. The Seafood Soup, however, needs improvement. The soup is made with shrimps, thinly-sliced squid, fish, diced seaweed wrap, and an egg that was left to cook on its soup. The soup tasted bland but I’d still like to acknowledge the fact that the squid was cooked nicely on this one.

Dong Juan also adds new dishes year after year and it was an honor for us to be the first in line to try their new Dong Juan Tablea Collection. I just love how they did not limit chocolate (specifically, our local tablea) to drinks and desserts, but also added it to main dishes like pasta and bread.

Their new dishes are Spanish Chorizo Pasta with Cacao de Bola, Carbonara with Cacao de Bola, and Linguine Meatballs with Tablea Marinara Sauce. My least favorite would be the Linguine Meatballs because I found the marinara sauce a little sour. Completely understandable because they based it on the Italian palate. I still prefer the traditional sweet flavor though. But the Meatballs is one thing that I liked on this dish. My top pick would be the Carbonara because it was so flavorful and I liked that they added shiitake mushrooms in it. The tablea shavings also complimented this dish really well. And I like how they would shave the Cacao de Bola on the pasta right in front of you. The sweet aroma of the tablea makes it even better.

Shave all that tablea! Yum.

Lastly, for dessert, we had their Mug Cakes and they serve it in different flavors like Dark Fudge, Red Velvet, Salted Caramel, Crunchy Cookie Butter, and S’mores.

Red Velvet Mug Cake
My favorites are the Red Velvet, Dark Fudge and S’mores. The Salted Caramel needed a little more caramel (preferable drizzled on top of the ice cream as well so that it doesn’t all look the same), and the Crunchy Cookie Butter needed a little more crunch or else it would just taste like the Dark Fudge Mug Cake. And I wish they made the cake a tiny bit thicker so that we don’t have to dig all the way to the bottom just to get a piece of the cake. Others preferred it to be served in transparent glass containers so that it would look more enticing. But I understand that it can be difficult to make that possible since they bake the cake inside the mugs and placing it on glass containers which has the tendency to break on high temperature just makes it infeasible, unless of course they use oven-safe transparent glass containers (which are, by the way, hard to find). What I can suggest is probably to add toppings on the ice cream to differentiate the "look" of each flavor and make it Instagram-friendly.

Overall, Dong Juan is a must-visit restaurant. And you can check their menu on Zomato. I’m definitely coming back with my family. And I’m not surprised that they are slowly branching out all over the country. I can see a lot, and I mean A LOT, of potential in Dong Juan.
