Food Republic, Mabolo

Photo taken from Food Republic's Facebook Page.

Food Republic is a new hole in the wall resto serving affordable rice meals for as low as P99. They are located at #5 E-zone F. Cabahug Mabolo near Shakey's and infont of Citi Park Hotel. If you know where Rain Forest Park is, this place is located right beside it.

As we all know, Cebu is now booming with Eat-all-you-can restaurants where Cebuanos can now enjoy unlimited serving of their favorite dishes without paying too much. Food Republic is just one of the many food joints in Cebu that offers unlimited chicken for as low as P199. But wait, that's not all. For P199 you don't just get chicken wings, you also get chicken breasts, legs, thighs, ribs and more! And I'm sure not a lot of people like the wing part alone. This meal also comes with unlimited rice & unlimited fries.

They also offer P250 for unlimited chicken, spaghetti, fries & rice. For their bottomless iced tea I got a bit confused because during our visit their staff told us that bottomless iced tea is only P40 but their menu shows it's P75. We ordered 2 bottomless iced tea and they served us 2 pitchers. The other table got a pitcher for P50 and yet we were charged P80 for 2 pitchers. Haha! So I'm not sure.

We barely finished the 2nd pitcher and regretfully wished we only ordered 1. So to those who will be dining for 2.. JUST. ORDER. ONE. PITCHER. And I don't suggest drinking a lot of iced tea anyway because you'd only get full quicker making no room for the rest of the food. Also, because we had a lot to drink my bestie and I only managed to finish 1 set of chicken and 2 rounds of fries. I also just finished 2 cups rice because I'm on a diet. Haha, just kidding!

Another set please!
Last pitcher. Sayang ang P40 besh!
Aside from that they also offer P99 meals with unlimited rice. They also have shakes for P50. Here's their menu which I got from their FB page.

However, the place is surprisingly small and can get a little crowded. Their kitchen & cashier is located at the ground floor and you can dine on the second floor or outside. I find this set-up unsafe in case of kitchen fires then diners on the second floor would be trapped. I know, me and my wild imagination right? But you'll never know. It's always best to be cautious at all times. Their staircase has really small steps too and my friend & I almost slipped a few times while going up & down. Hoping they can expand soon, or move to a bigger location at least.

But overall, my best friend and I were happy with our food and experience. Staff were very attentive to our needs and they would proactively ask if you needed anything else. In fact, we are already planning our next visit here. We would definitely come back with our partners and a few more colleagues/friends.

Rico's Lechon, Mactan Promenade

What's worst than a cancelled restaurant reservation is a cancelled reservation without prior notice. And to make matters worst, this reservation was for a private surprise birthday party that was planned days before.

My kuya's girlfriend booked this restaurant's function room for my family on the occasion of our kuya's 29th birthday and were due to go on a Sunday, 11th of June. Also, she had given special instructions that it would only be for 12 people and have also advised them on our orders in advance.

Having been a big fan of lechon and being my first time to eat at Rico's Lechon (because I usually go to CnT or House of Lechon), we were all really looking forward to it.

On Saturday, 10th of June, my kuya's GF received a call from the restaurant to confirm her reservation. We showed up half an hour early on the night of the reservation with balloons and cake, only to be told they did not have a reservation for the function room (not even for a regular table). One of the staff explained that they "do not have reservations on weekends" and then offered us a table at the back instead. That was the lamest excuse we've heard from a restaurant especially after learning that they only had one function room and a larger group had already occupied it. So they revised their excuse and said, "di mi maka book og function room for 12 kay good for 40 man ang room og mu presyo og around 15k" (we can't book the function room for just 12 people because the room is good for 40 and would cost you around 15k). Then why the hell did you say yes to us when we placed our reservation days back?!

Since we drove all the way from Consolacion, and it was already too late for us to find another private [restaurant] room that evening and my kuya & his GF were already on their way for the "surprise dinner", we decided to take the tables offered to us. It was a bit, um no, it was VERY disappointing because my family got seated separately.

To make it even more interesting, my sis called the waitress and asked her to take our orders, and SURPRISE the waitress already knew our orders and even mentioned that they had called us earlier to advise they no longer had Chicken Skin available. Funny, so you mean to say we did not have a table reservation but you knew we had placed our orders ahead? Wow. And no, we did not receive a call about the Chicken Skin. The waitress was kind enough to apologize about our cancelled/non-existent reservation though.

Few minutes later, my kuya and his GF arrived at the venue. His GF immediately approached the staff and asked for the manager. The manager apologized for what had happened and explained that they did receive our reservation first but had given it to the larger group. Oh, so there it is. It seems to me that this restaurant prioritizes customers that generate more revenue regardless if you've made reservations or not! We would've understand. It's business, yes. But why were we not given a heads up? How hard was it to contact us about cancelling?

Here's kuya's GF asking for the manager.
So our kuya's GF asked what they were gonna do about it because this simply wasn't acceptable. That was the only time when the manager decided to serve us complimentary items to apologize for the stuff-up. I just love how it took us 3 complaints with their staff before they actually thought of this idea. We weren't expecting any form of compensation to be honest and it was actually quite nice of them. However, it would've been something I'd appreciate more if it was just a regular dinner they messed up. But no, it was for a special day. The issue here is not only the cancelled reservation, but the subsequent problems that arose and made-up excuses we got when their staff intentionally rescinded the reservation to cater others. Obviously it wasn't handled well.

As for the food we ordered their Regular Lechon, Spicy Lechon, Garlic Squid Balls, Sinigang na Hipon, Camaron Rebosado, Sizzling Squid Head, Baked Scallops, Chopsuey, Pancit Canton, Rice, and a pitcher of Iced Tea. The complimentary items served were Lechon, Cucumansi Quenchers for the adults, and Mango Shakes for the kids.

And here's my verdict, Lechon (both regular and spicy) was perhaps one of the best tasting lechon I've tried. I just love its skin. It was very flavorful and crispy. Meat is also tasty and juicy. My kids also loved the Garlic Squid Balls, so did I. The Sinigang lacked a bit in sourness or maybe my taste buds are just used to my husband's extra sour Sinigang. The Camaron Rebosado was dry and boring. I find the coating too thick. The Sizzling Squid Head was good and the meat was soft. Baked Scallops were OK, I just found the garlic flavor overpowering. Chopsuey had too much black pepper according to my mum. Pancit was bland and dry. The Cucumansi Quencher and Mango Shake were good though.

Overall, it was a bad experience but the lechon was good. Other things on the menu were so-so. The place is nice, I just love the interior. But would we come back? Probably not.

Special Message to Rico's Lechon: Only accept reservations if you're intending to keep them. By making a reservation, you're entering into an informal contract; your customers will show up and you need to be ready for them. It is also your job to inform customers at least a few hours ahead if their reservation gets cancelled and we have the right to know why (the real reason why) so we can book some place else. You don't just confirm reservations, only to let us know it's cancelled once we are already there. That is simply very unprofessional.

Happy Birthday to our Kuya! At least they sang him a song. Cake was ours by the way.

Wendy's, Mall of Asia Pasay

My husband grew up in Subic and he has always been telling me how much he missed eating at Wendy's (since we don't have Wendy's in Cebu). So after years of being away from his hometown, we finally had the chance to visit Manila together and when we found an outlet inside MOA his face lit up the same way a child would to a candy store. LOL.

He initially had trouble picking what to order but then I found that they had a Jalapeño Cheeseburger and I remembered how he likes his food spicy so I suggested that he tries it.

I was a bit surprised with the size of the burger though. It was so small -- I mean, the patty was really thin. Jollibee's Yum burger might actually be slightly bigger & cheaper! I can already see the disappointment in his face. I asked him to order something else but he surprisingly refused. He then said that Wendy's wasn't the same as he remembered it years back. I also took a bite from it, it was OK but I've tasted better Jalapeño burgers in Cebu.

I, on the otherhand, ordered the Salisbury Steak which was 2 thin slices of burger steak in mushroom gravy. I liked its buttery taste (on the sauce) but I found the patty a bit dry. Jollibee's burger steak is a lot juicier & bigger too! Sorry, I keep comparing it to our local Jollibee because I think it is the best fast food chain to compare it with when considering the prices. Haha.

My son liked their ice cream though. At least somebody liked something from what we ordered here. Haha. And I just love their P199 salad bar but did not get to try it. Probably next time, when they expand here in Cebu or on my next visit to Manila. I wonder when that would be. Haha.

But overall experience (plus it was my first time), I'd say it was below my expectation but it wasn't bad as well. If I were to rate it between 1-10 with 10 being the highest, I'd give it a 7. I guess now I know why they don't have a branch in Cebu. LOL. Just kidding on that last part. But it was still a good lunch right before our long 6-hour bus ride to Baguio.

Magnum Manila, Mall of Asia Pasay

My husband and I just found this place while strolling around MOA. I've read about this on Facebook however they don't have a branch in Cebu so I was absolutely ecstatic when I saw this place during my short visit in Manila. Not to mention, it only costs P120 to Decorate-Your-Own Magnum! I found it reasonable since it's about the same price as the DYO (Decorate Your Own) Ice Cream in Butterbean. The only difference is that the ice cream they use at Butterbean melts easily compared to the Magnum ice cream and it doesn't taste as good as the Magnum. Haha!

Update: they've recently opened up a store in SM Seaside Cebu a few months after eating here.

I just love the fact that they have a variety of toppings to choose from and you get to pick 3. I was just a bit disappointed when the lady at the counter personally chose 1 of the toppings for me. I chose the crushed pistachios first then she suggested that it goes perfectly with the dark chocolate balls & all of a sudden she added them to MY ice cream. So I only got to CHOOSE 2 toppings (didn't really have a choice after she proactively picked one for me. LOL) I respect her suggestion but it would've been great if I got to choose it myself. Haha! But nonetheless, my Magnum was sooo gooood and my son liked it very much!

They also have a nice set-up for their stall -- modern and very spacious. In fact, we decided to stay there a little longer after finishing our ice cream while waiting for the time before we head to the terminal for our 6-hour trip to Baguio. We were the only customers that time anyway and the lady at the counter didn't really mind.
